This coffee producer lies in the high range, northwest rugged land of Rwanda. Much of the success of Musasa Dukunde Kawa, this particular cooperative, can be attributed to the PEARL programme. The project switched the focus in the Rwandan coffee sector from an historic emphasis on quantity to one of quality. This helped open up Rwanda to the highly valued speciality coffee market.
Before the proliferation of washing stations such as Nkara, the norm in Rwanda was for small farmers to sell semi-processed coffee cherries to a middleman and the market was a single exporter. This combined with declining prices in the 1990's brought severe hardships to farmers, with some simply abandoning their farms. Thanks to this new cooperative, today is a different picture. Farmers in this area have now seen their income double and the cooperative produces some outstanding lots for the speciality coffee market.
The coffee processes at the cooperative are robust and thorough. After pulping the coffee is fermented overnight and then graded using flotation channels that sort the coffee by weight (the heaviest being the best). Lots are separated and dated by harvest and grade. (A1, A2, date etc) This simple but effective practice is a crucial tool in controlling quality and ensuring the traceability of lots.
We know our coffee fans will not be disappointed with this coffee. We have a small lot that will be roasted in small batches, as all our beans are, ready for you to enjoy at home.
